Bicycle Bicycle Bicycle!
- from Bicycle Race, Queen, 1978

Bike Race

I love taking photos of the natural world (and other slow-moving objects).
Picture
It's not often that you'll find me photographing a sporting event, but one day I thought, why not shoot this bike race right here in the River Arts District?
I came home and loaded about a hundred shots from a couple of the Criterium events into my computer.

They seemed a bit disappointing... dark and static.

What I really remembered was how fast the riders were going by in the moment, so I started layering dozens of the images together.

Pretty soon, I had digitally re-created some of the movement and excitement of the race in this piece as you can see to the right.

I've printed and sold a several of these images over the last couple of years... each one I make is slightly different—size, format, or color. Each photograph I make is an original in that sense.

Entered into a competition for a supergraphic on the side of an Asheville Transit bus. Unfortunately, came in fourth - just edged out by by a hare. (it's been a while, but I think that one of the winners included a bunny...)

This might also be titled Ghost Bike. Or possibly Two Suns.

Won an Honorable Mention at the Theatre Art Galleries in High Point, NC for the Invitational Exhibition, "The Bicycle:  Art Meets Form" from July 26 - Sept 22, 2013.
